    The honest qualities of pine are boldly expressed in Soft Baroque’s wood coffee table. The satisfyingly rational joints of traditional Finnish log houses, themselves a celebration of elementary wooden construction, have been used to decorative effect in this most solid of tables. Round notch joints have been inflated to ‘comic proportions’ by Soft Baroque, who predict that their solid wood coffee table will outlive any of its owners and largely be used for dancing on, given its hulking proportions.

    Pine gets better with age. The colours mature to a deeper palette. The heartwood and sapwood age at different speeds, bringing out the natural grain patterns. Over time, the pine used in each natural wood coffee table settles into a rich and complex honey tone. Pine is a soft wood and will get dents and bruises over the years. But don’t think of them as blemishes or flaws. Embrace them. They’re evidence of life lived and furniture loved. Pine isn’t life-proof. It’s proof of life. All our products are locally made by select Finnish makers and specialists. Every pine tree is harvested from sustainably managed Finnish forests. The wood is hand-selected of the highest quality and each piece has its own unique colours and grain patterns.

    Nicholas Gardner and Saša Štucin of Soft Baroque work across the disciplines of object design and art. Their sought after practice is dedicated to creating works in which function and imagery conflict and the boundaries between concept and the representational are blurred. Neither beauty nor logic are abandoned however, rather Soft Baroque confidently play with the tension between each of these elements.
